A man and a woman from New York state were killed Saturday night when a tree fell onto the Merritt Parkway and smashed through the front windshield of their car. Two passengers riding in the back seat of the 2006 Volvo station wagon suffered minor injuries and were transported to Norwalk Hospital for treatment.

Joseph J. Stavola, 46, of Pelham, N.Y., and his passenger, Jeanne C. Serocke, 44, also of Pelham, were killed instantly after colliding with the tree shortly after 9 p.m. in the southbound lane near exit 42, police said.
Upon arrival, Westport firefighters found a heavily damaged vehicle containing four passengers.
The driver and front seat passenger were pronounced dead at the scene by a state medical examiner. The fatal car accident remains under investigation.
